Rendezvous With Destiny by Mort Kunstler ~ General John Buford at Gettysburg, June 30, 1863. “One of the greatest heroes to emerge from the battle of Gettysburg was Union General John Buford. It was his foresight and quick action to set up defensive positions on the ridges west of town that may have saved the Northern Army from destruction by Lee’s troops. I am so pleased to do a painting of Buford for the first time since 1998. My hope is for the viewer of this painting to be reminded of American heroes like John Buford and the countless others, from the North and South, who demonstrated such remarkable valor at Gettysburg.”
“It had rained in the early morning, which gave me the opportunity to paint an interesting, clearing sky radiating sunlight. The dark clouds at the top of the painting – based on weather reports of the day – lend much more drama to the scene than a blue sky would do.” – Mort Künstler
