Island Memories by John M. Barber ~ The tiny island of Tangier, which measures only 3 ½ by 1 ½ miles wide is located in the Virginia waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Captain John Smith discovered it in 1608 and many of the island’s 700 residents are descendants of the original English settlers. Moonlight bathes the west ridge of the island where most of the substantial “Captains’ Houses” are found. In the foreground is a locally built wooden fishing vessel that has seen better days and has been pulled up on the creek bank to “rest her bones”. AP’s are remarqued by the artist.
