Palo Duro by Robert Summers - Colonel Ranald Mackenzie along with 600 men of the 4th U.S. Cavalry Division departed Fort Concho into uncharted areas of the Texas Panhandle. Their mission was to find and subdue Comanche Chief Quanah Parker and his tribe of renegade Indians. The Palo Duro campaign effectively ended the Indian Wars on the southern plains of the Texas Panhandle. |
